Cava Menzies & Nick Phillips

In a repertoire drawn primarily from the jazz catalog as well as the Great American Songbook, pianist Cava Menzies and trumpeter Nick Phillips go far beneath the surface of the melody lines and chord changes. Their emotional improvisations have a quiet wakefulness, a deceptive simplicity that reveals careful construction. They follow the advice of Miles Davis in not only knowing what to play, but also what to leave out. Taking inspiration from Miles, and the classic works of Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, Jim Hall, and John Coltrane, their introspective phrasemaking creates a cocoon of musical space where, Menzies explains, “You have a moment to breathe.”
