Ashwin Batish should be applauded for being one of the forerunners of the Worldbeat genre. Hidden as a sub-genre under the larger “World Music” umbrella, Worldbeat compositions can carry quite a punch because of their hybridity. Trained in the intricacies of North Indian classical music by his father and legend, Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish, Ashwin has stepped out of the box and formed his own spin on age-old tradition and scale. In the ’80s, his tracks Bombay Boogie, Raga Rock, Casbah Shuffle, and India Beat charted in the top 10 on many World, NPR, and college radio stations across USA, Canada, and Europe. This success launched interest in Ashwin’s music, and he was invited to festivals such as WOMAD, the Vancouver Folk Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, and the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
